EA5HAV-11, SEP 3rd, 2011 launch from Spain

Postby EA5HAV » Fri Aug 19, 2011 3:09 pm

Plan is to launch around 0800 UTC from Mota del Cuervo (Spain), callsign will be EA5HAV-11 and will transmit APRS on VHF, so it should be trackable from aprs.fi.

Tracker will be a trackuino board. The balloon is the "ebay" kind, filled with helium. Expected burst altitude around 80,000 ft (not trying to smash records here, I'm focusing on just having the thing fly).

This is going to be very early in the morning for us watching in the US. Good Luck!

What happened!? Your track on APRS is very interesting and I'm wondering if you lost signal, aborted the launch, or what.

I was thinking the same thing. I was up watching it live, and it just stopped sending sending packets. Interested in seeing what happened.

Thanks for the interest guys.

Unfortunately we lost track of it about 5 minutes into the flight. I had an IGate set-up in one of the chase cars and we tried to stay close to the predicted trajectory at all times but we didn't get any signal, so I believe the radio quit for some reason. Without the payload I can't really tell why. We also swept the probable landing areas considering a wide range of burst altitudes, but we had no luck. I'm hoping for a hunter or a farmer to come across it in the next few months, but chances are minimal because it's a very lowly populated area.

On the bright side, the launch was a success considering it was a very windy day. After our first doomed attempt in july (see video on my blog), that was an achievement on its own :)

That sucks. I hope someone finds it. Better luck next time. As we are all aware, nothing is guaranteed. Hopefully it will be found, to fly another day.

Looking good. I started picking it up over the radio at just under 9,000 feet.
