New club's first launch

New club's first launch

Postby tstowe » Fri Apr 27, 2012 12:36 am

On Friday, May 4 Beaufort High School's newest club, the High Altitude Balloon Club, will do their first balloon launch.

We will launch from the campus of the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie in Allendale, SC at 10:00 AM EST. The coordinates are 33.013038 -81.298833. The balloon is a 1,500g sounding balloon from Kaymont. We will have a MT-300 ham radio tracker from Byonics and a SPOT Satellite Messenger. We are expecting a touchdown about two miles southwest of Williams, SC (33.10498 -80.93433).

You can track the balloon on http://aprs.fi under the callsign KJ4RSG-11. The SPOT Satellite Messenger will send position reports that can read at http://share.findmespot.com/shared/face ... zyCpag78kG. My cell phone will also be running the APRSdroid app that will allow you to track us as we chase the balloon. We can be tracked at http://aprs.fi under the callsign kJ4RSG-10.

Once we recover the capsule the photos will be posted to www.TheTalon.SmugMug.com/mis/space.

Good luck tomorrow. I'm wondering if I'll be able to pick it up over the radio at any point in the flight from here.

About 240 miles from Barnwell, SC to Carrollton, GA. They have been know to transmit 500 miles. It's possible.

Looking good. I started picking it up over the radio at just under 9,000 feet.

I've been a member of that since 2010 (106,000 feet).
